We R One is saddened by the death of SPC Michael D. Woods SPC Michael D. Woods, 43, died Friday, November 11, 2011 in Shelbyville. He was a disabled combat Army veteran of the Gulf War and a founding member of the Embracing Truth Fellowship in Shelbyville. He was the leader of the Shelby County 4-H Horse Club and a volunteer firefighter for the Pine Grove Fire Department in St. Cloud, FL. He was co-author of the fictional novel, The End of Days—The Warning. As a Gulf War veteran, he served from 1989-1993 in the 101st Airborne. Michael was very active in numerous veterans organizations such as American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Viet Nam Veterans of America, and Paralyzed Veteran’s of America. He was also a lifetime member of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He was a former president of the National Gulf War Resource Center in Washington, D.C. from 2000-2004 and often gave testimony in front of the U.S. Congress for the purpose of validating what came to be known as Gulf War Syndrome. He was a veteran’s advocate for Rolling Thunder and for those involved in Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He marched for veteran’s rights from Florida to Washington, D.C., which was called The Last Patrol. He also helped developed a self-help guide for Gulf War veterans, a publication that later was the basis for a more encompassing self-help book for veterans. A lot of Michael’s mission around his being a veterans advocate involved giving of his time and effort in helping correct mistakes and providing the necessary groundwork for the benefit of current and future generations of veterans. He is survived by his wife, Jessica Doherty Woods of Shelbyville; his daughters, Danielle J. Woods and Megan Woods, both of Shelbyville; his sons, Christopher Michael Woods of Shelbyville and Dustin Michael Sigward of Washington, D.C.; his father, Kenneth Woods of Louisville; his mother, Linda Hunt (Bill) of Shelbyville; his brother, the Rev. Bobby Woods (Carrie) of Shelbyville; his sisters, Emily Stewart (John) of LaGrange and Valerie Shelton (Stanley) of Boston; his stepbrothers, Willie Hunt (Valerie) of Taylorsville, Robert Hunt of Dallas, TX, and Cole Hunt of Louisville; his stepsister, Nikki Hunt of Fernandina Beach, FL; his grandmother, Mary Berry of Louisville; 11 nieces and nephews and 3 great nieces. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Shannon Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Woods and Chaplain Major Bill Draper officiating. Visitation: 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial: Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, KY. Expressions of sympathy: Embracing Truth Fellowship or Michael’s Family’s Expenses. |
